The author, M. Scott Peck was a psychiatrist and counsellor. This book was written as an aid to personal development. Topics discussed include the dangers of simplistic thinking in the face of the problems in life, institutionalised racism and sexism, as well as how we are influenced by the bleak vision of the world that the media gives us. The works of psychiatrists such as Freud and Jung are written about. This is not a religious book, though spirituality is discussed. M. Scott Peck often alternates between calling God ?He? and ?She.? Whether this was an attempt to avoid sexist language, I don?t know. Yet, this is not a book written to proselytise the reader. M. Scott Peck does not define God along any denominational lines. I have not read any of the other books M. Scott Peck authored, so I don?t know how valid the criticisms of his written by other readers of his work are. Though short, do not expect to breeze through this book quickly. There are many concepts to grapple with intellectually.
